After a month of alternating between my favourite songs from last year’s playlists and holiday songs it was nice to get back into the routine of discovering new music. It’s funny, when I listen to a new playlist for the first time some songs I connect with and fall in love with on the first listen, others it takes me almost the entire month to decide if I like it or not.
So, without further ado, here is this month’s playlist for your listening pleasure.
Standard disclaimer applies: If I don’t talk about a song you recommended that doesn’t mean I hate it and please don’t let it deter you from making future suggestions.
All the Small Things – Blink 182
Amazingly, although I’m at least passingly familiar with this song, it’s never actually made it into my music collection until now. It’s a classic, of course, and now that I’ve listened to it fully for a month I am definitely on board with why. I loved it. Definitely a good one to sing along to.
Time of Our Life – DAY6
A lot of my friends are into k-pop so I tend to end up with at least one or two songs on my playlist pretty much every month. While I wouldn’t say I’ve latched on to any favourite artists, overall I do enjoy the genre. There’s something just fun and joyful about it, and that definitely applies to this song as well.
Chase the Sun – Planet Funk
Confession: This is the Colorado Avalanche goal song and I had no idea until the first time it played and I had a ‘WAIT, I KNOW THIS’ moment. Then, of course, I wanted to add the ‘hey hey hey’ that the fans chant when it plays. Fully admitting this is on here for the fun and nostalgia associations more than anything else.
Don’t Be so Hard on Yourself – Alex Lahey
This is one of those songs that grew on me. The chorus is definitely one you can sing along to and it’s just a nice, upbeat tune.
Dream On – Aerosmith
Over the years I’ve heard various covers of this song but, weirdly, not the original. It’s another classic though and I love this version as much as any of the others I’ve heard.
Untethered Angel – Dream Theater
I have to be in the right mood for metal music but this is a fantastic song. Definitely one to bang your head to in the car while singing along loudly.
The Distance – Cake
This is one of those songs where as soon as I heard it for the first time I fell in love with it. I had to check that it hadn’t been used in a movie soundtrack because it’s very much got that vibe to it. Easily one of my favourites from this month’s playlist.
Detachable Penis – King Missle
Fun fact: This was the first song I heard after I’d rung in the new year and was driving home from my friend’s place. It’s utterly weird but at the same time really catchy and fun.
Bad Guy – Billie Eilish
I spent a lot of my Christmas break scrolling through TikTok, as you do. So when I heard this song it was kind of familiar but I couldn’t figure out why. It’s because tiny fragments of it were sampled for this meme.
Anyway, the full song is a banger and I love it but, yeah, for the first couple of listens I was just thinking of this.
Hip – MAMAMOO
Another fantastic k-pop song. Again, it’s just really catchy, upbeat and fun.
Kissing Strangers – DNCE feat. Nicki Minaj
This is one of those songs that you just can’t help but sing along to.
Stand Out – Tevin Campbell
My sister assures me I have seen A Goofy Movie, which this song comes from, but I have no recollection of. But even without the associated nostalgia it’s actually a really fun song that will definitely get stuck in your head.
Dela – Johnny Clegg & Savuka
This has got a classic 80s sound to it, even though it came out right at the end of the decade. It definitely gave me a feeling of nostalgia even though I’d never heard the song before.
Consequence – The Notwist
I have spent the entire month trying to figure out why I know this song. Because as soon as I heard it it was incredibly familiar, and I knew fragments of the lyrics but not all of them. I wondered if it had been in a show or a movie that I’ve watched a lot but Google says no. The best I can figure out is that it’s one of those songs that used to be on the radio a lot when I worked nights. Anyway, it’s a great song, irritating familiarity aside.
Wow, there were actually a lot more songs on this playlist that I felt strongly enough to write about than I realised.
See you all next month!
